Permanent art show / museum

Unfortunately, after 6 months of use, the Surf Museum of Santos its in horrible conditions. The structure is all rusted and in deterioration. The city´s responsable for the area, send me an email ordering me to pick up all the arts from the museum. As the order came from the mayor, I couldn´t do anything but put all the art pieces on a storage.

The city didn´t put a real responsable for the arts on the museum and nobody cleaned anything... now is all clean and safe.

I´m trying to organize something that I can show everything again, but it will take sometime.

If any artist want to get the piece back, I can send it, but sincerely have no money to do it. Sorry for this. Or if you know someone that is coming to Brasil, I can meet with the person and pass the pieces.

Again, I´m trying to do my best and sorry for this...

The main idea was to keep the art pieces permanently on the museum, for the free enjoyment of the people, but like always, burocracy and greed speaks louder than love.

I kindly ask all the artists involved to please kindly understand the situation...

Hello friends,
As some of you may or may not know, Jan and Arlene Mattson have had some health problems lately. Arlene had surgery two weeks ago to remove a brain tumor that had grown back after 15 years. She is still in northern California recovering and is expected to be back home in about four weeks.
Jan was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. He went in for an outpatient procedure last Friday to remove the cancerous tumor. The surgery did not go as expected. The surgeon was unable to remove the tumor and caused an ulcer to bleed during surgery. They could not get the bleeding to stop since the tumor was in the way, so they admitted Jan to the hospital with severe internal bleeding. The doctors told Jan he would not make it but miraculously the ulcer stopped bleeding on it's own and Jan has been getting better everyday since. He is now back at home slowly recovering so he is strong enough for a second attempt at removing the tumor.
Both Jan and Arlene are self -employed and are not able to work right now. Bills are beginning to accumulate and we are reaching out to you, as friends, to help support this wonderful couple.

Hi folks.... first of all, sorry the lack of information... I was so crazy freaking out busy that I couldn´t stop working.... after all the stress and disappointment, the museum is up, and the art show it´s on... For the first 6 days of the festival we use a tent, to display some of the art.. it was the only way to do it at that point... on the 26th, the city gave us the OK to put the arts and boards on the museum... Theo Hetherington, Ciro Bicudo, Felipe Siebert, Maylin, Paula Marina and even Simon Withney helped so much and I´m so thankful for that... I need to share the curator deal with Theo... without him, the art show would not happen... he´s the man and a lovely and respectful dude... Jonathan and Jared Mattson, Yusuke Hanai arrived on the 22th, and it was super fun to have all this guys at my house... my wife was about to kill me (6 guys at my house), but after all, she´s was cool... hehehe... The Mattson 2 played at the tent on the 23th, and then kindly played again on the 25th, for the museum opening.... Yusuke made a live instalation on the tent and now it´s on the museum... I move to another apartment last friday and still don´t have internet connection... so only today I will have time to go and take some pictures for you guys (will post tomorrow)... These photos below are from the lovely lady Paula Marina... enjoy...

The art show will be up for some more weeks... We will have a better film festival in some weeks on the museum, due that the screening room, wasn´t ready until the last day... will post as soon as happen..... thanks for all the artists, film makers (sorry Simon Withney, Mick Sowry, Grupo Sal, Pepê Cezar, Nathan Oldfield, Woodshed), workers, friends, my wife for understanding... love to all...

I Santos Surfilm Festival 2009

The I Santos Surfilm Festival 2009 will be happen with a lot of effort and kindness from all the film makers involved. We did all this without any, any sponsor. The Festival will be held inside the new Surf Museum that will have a screening room with around 30 seats. Small…. But full of love… No one will be paying nothing to see the films below… all for free and all for good.

I knew I was missing someone… Theo is an artist from California. He’s a very classic dude and the nicest thing for us is that he will be here in Santos for the show. We are so stoked about it that we will arrange a mural for him to paint with the kids on the Festival days. He’s a great guy and his painting speaks for himself… Will be awesome to have you here broh!

What’s you name and where are you from?
My name is Theodore Mark Hetherington, Born in Hawaii, Raised in Southern California, live in Costa Mesa, Southern California.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I have always been a doodler, since I was really small. I love the scribble game!

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
I love to create art. I love painting on everything and anything. I paint because I enjoy it. I feel my work is an extension of my personality, which i hope gives people a positive vibe and gets them stoked on life!

What’s surf for you?
Surfing for me, is a place to clear my head, to reset. It always puts me in a better mood. There's just something about being surrounded by nature, not just seeing it, but feeling it under you, and being totally submerged in it. All it takes is one wave, one good bottom turn, one drive pump down the line, and I’m stoked all day!

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
I have worked for Trader Joe's, a specialty grocery store, as a sign artist for 5 years. I recently was promoted to be the regional artist/ muralist. I now travel around from store to store painting big murals. This was a personal goal of mine when I first started. I also started my own silk-screening/art studio 3 years ago, and am proud to still be going strong. I have to say that being apart of this surf museum is definitely a highlight in my art career. I'm very excited and honored to be included.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
I think of the people that I met on my last visit. They opened their houses, opened their hearts, and opened their lives to my friends and I. They are pure, real, and beautiful people.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I am very honored and stoked to be part of this art show. This couldn't have come at a better time.

I hope they enjoy seeing my work and I look forward to being involved in more shows.

I should say my book “Alma Santista”, but I will say, the highlight of my photography carrier it was when my uncle cried when he saw one photo that I took. That was deep and it was very emotional to me.

Luiz Blanco is one of the best surf photographers from Brasil right now… His work is very artistic and brings the best of surf performance, mixed with the mood that make us want to go surf… Below some deep words from Luiz, and above a little example of what this guy can do….

What's you name and where are you from?
Luiz Blanco, Rio de Janeiro.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
For real was never a moment that this happens, the things flow on a way that my ideas and works got to a subjective way. I was always against the stuff that was being copied on the market, and my goal was to make a different type of photography, and in this way I got closer to the art and not only photojournalism. It’s funny; because the photojournalism started closer to the art and after sometime turned to be a crazy money race like it’s is today, of course with exceptions.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
Depends. I try to show a different look, that represents something more. The beach it’s not only the wave, or the surfer doing a trick. If you know how to use other elements you can create a narrative that tells not only the moment, but a place. It’s more complete in my opinion. My photos are open to another interpretation, and not only my. A lot of times a friend tells me something from my photo that I never saw… some detail, or point of view. And I think this is the nicest thing about art, because its always open to different interpretations, and it’s no right and wrong. Unfortunately it’s a lot of lack of interest, from a public that were conditioned to see things ready.

What's surf for you?
Surf is another form of expression and gives me the return/pleasure almost instant. It’s another feelings other than art. It’s faster. It’s good to speed up your life sometimes.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Did an article to Transworld Surf magazine, two covers on Fluir magazine, and I’m at the Blackwater magazine since the first issue.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
More I travel, more I see how Brasil it’s late in everything. The culture here it’s almost none and not talking about education. In the other side, much more I travel, more I miss home, so it’s impossible to say that I don’t like Brasil.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I see that are people that give value to art surf in Brasil, and I’m happy about this.

Bob Mctavish

Bob Mctavish was the first man to cut a longboard and make something that we call shortboard. He was one of the most important characters on the shortboard revolution era. He still shapes everyday. He’s a very special man, full of love and kindness. And it’s someone that I really admire and I’m sure we will share some waves some day. I ask him to do something for the art show, and it took sometime to convince him to do it… After sometime, he agrees to make some drawing about surfboards concept. It’s an unspeakable honor to have Mr. Mctavish part of the II Santos SurfArt. It will be the first time that he’s part of an art show what makes this all very special… I'm stoked my brother! Really, really stoked! Below are his words and above it's him killing it on his 60's!

What's you name and where are you from?
Bob McTavish, Byron bay, Australia.

When did you find out that you would be an artist/shaper?
Artist: 1956 at school. Shaper: 1963 after I'd shaped a few hundred.

What do you want to show to people when you do your boards / art?
Boards: the higher FUN quotient teamed with lots of easy wave-catching and natural feel. Art: Invoke a sense of being there for that important moment.

What's surf for you?
Only sport/pastime that I wanna do. A lifelong fascination and refinement.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Hawaii in 1963 when I stowed away on a ship. Shortboard Revolution, 1967. Love affair with Lennox Head for 40 years.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Bossa Nova, dancing, rhythm. Gilberto, Jobin, Bonfa.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
It's my first. I'm a bit scared.

Richard Dowdy

Richard it’s a classic man. He was introduced to me by Drew Kampion and I was so happy that happen. He lived on the golden age of surf art and sport and will show some vintage shots on the Santos SurfArt. My name is Richard Dowdy—nickname is Slick. I was born in Wyoming and moved to Southern California (Ocean Beach) after the fifth grade. Before beginning high school I moved to Encinitas where I first began surfing at Moonlight Beach.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I started drawing cartoons when I was in the fourth grade; by the time I entered high school, I was drawing and painting, taking photos and making short 8mm films. In college (Long Beach State) I majored in art with an English minor; this eventually changed to English with a minor in photojournalism. Art rules my life; I am constantly photographing a variety of subjects. Each photograph, no matter how good or bad, advances my knowledge and respect for the truly great photographers of the world.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
My photographs are extensions of my interests and passion to capture moments in time.

What’s surf for you?
It is the ultimate use of nature’s power: wind, water and tides. The more we realize how special and unique surfing is, the more we will do to preserve the ocean’s purity and save the beaches for those who follow in our tracks.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
At the end of my college years I went to work for Hansen Surfboards in Cardiff by-the-Sea; first I rubbed rails, and then glassed boards. Later, I was a glosser during the summer season. Along with Hansen’s manager Jim Jenks (who later founded Ocean Pacific Sunwear), I created the Stone Steps Surf Contest—an event made for fun with beer, bands and big-name surfers competing for trophies created by local surf shop workers. Though Jim and I left the contest after six years, it still is held each summer at Stone Steps in Leucadia. Later, I left Hansen’s and moved to Santa Barbara and began working as a writer for Capitol Records. When I returned to Encinitas a couple of years later, I returned to Hansen as their design and marketing person, creating ads and catalogs. At that time I was approached by a representative from Surfing Magazine who asked me to come on board, which I did, even though Jim Jenks had just asked me to be advertising director at OP. I chose the “glamour” of the magazine—with a much lower salary. I remained at Surfing as editor/art director/publisher for nearly eight years. After that, I established a radio-control car magazine while editing an airplane and boat magazine. The car magazine brought me back to photographing auto racing, something I had taken up during high school. That led to me eventually becoming a staff photographer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This past May was the 19th Indy 500 race I have photographed, along with numerous other Indycar and Formula One races, and most recently the MotoGP Championship in Indianapolis. After leaving the car magazine, I was asked by my friend Chris Carter to work as a writer on his TV series, The X-Files an enormously satisfying experience. After the X-Files, my wife Nanette, who had started a graphic design, branding and marketing studio, coerced me into joining her in the business. This marks the 23rd year since she began Studio 2055, where I serve as partner, writer, photographer and art director. I still photograph surfing, along with open-wheel auto racing, street people in Los Angeles, landscapes and musicians in concert.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Friendly, happy people, carnival, surf, thongs and Copacabana Beach…but most of all, Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi and Felipe Massa!

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I am honored to be among such prominent and creative people who are showing their work in such an inspiring and exciting venue.

SS: My lifelong love. It’s what keeps me a float.

X: Highlights on my professional side: Brad Gerlach finish second on the world, Lisa Andersen world champion 2 times on my board, on the last 15 + years many surfer qualifying to the WCT on my boards and many kids won the NSSA Nationals on my boards.

I never really ‘found out’ at a specific time that I was going to be an artist…I’ve more or less ‘found myself’ through creating art and being passionate about my interests in life.

It is life. It is my source of energy, and where my perspective comes from. The life of riding waves in such a pure way and filled with passion, represents eternal freedom to me.

I had a career as a professional photographer earlier this year, but I quit to become a professional photographer without a career. So far, I like it much, much more.

Rafael Sobral

When I was around 16 years old, I went to surf in a next town break, and when I got to the beach, I saw Rafael Sobral leaving and he said hi to me… He was already one of the top brazilians longboarders and I remember exactly how stoked I was with him saying hi to me… After some years I got to know him and he was always one of the kindest guys ever. He’s one of the guys behind the biggest websites in South America and it’s a awesome film maker. On the festival he will show a short movie about the last year event. And it’s a honor to have him with us.

What’s you name and where are you from?
My name is very big, Rafael Corrêa Sobral Caetano da Silva, but people known me as Rafael Sobral. I am from Santos, São Paulo.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I do not know if I am really an artist. My brother Nei Sobral is the artist in the family, I just try to do my best. I started doing surf videos to promote my longboard website. I have a lot of friends on brazilian longboard community and the video was an good opportunity expose their talent. I enjoyed it very much.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
In my first video, Longboard 2000, I decided to use a very simple formula, just music and surf trip images. In my second movie "Hang with us", I tried to make surfers tell their thoughts about what does longboard mean for each one. It was much more interesting. Now, as I do not have to much time to work on my video projects, I make some small videos that I publish in my website. In this videos, I try to bring the simple emotions of been surfing with family or meeting friends in longboard festivals and show their emotions in that moment. Try to give an inside view where idols are just a stoked friend. I try to find the best part of people.

What’s surf for you?
I think that surf is really my art. I am not that surfer, but when I surf, I feel like dancing. Maybe it is the way I express myself more naturally.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
My father was one of surf pioneers in São Vicente and through his friends was introduced the longboard community. When I was 17 years old (1994) I got longboard state championship. I was brazillian team member in the ASP World Championships at Makaha (1997), Australia (1999) and Brazil (2000). At that time internet was starting to get popular in Brazil and I started a longboard website (Hanging Together) that become very popular. So I decided to try making my living on that. I was a hard decision because I was working in a Research Institute, finishing my Master in Science degree and going to a Ph.D. I left everything behind for something I was not sure if was going to work. Sponsors was not used to internet so I decided to make a movie to show then the value of my work with something they were able to understand, a surf video. I never made money on the website but the videos were best sellers in Brazil, most because of the good network provided by the website. After an year I got no money anymore, but my skills as webmaster guarantee a job at Waves.com.br. Soon it became the leader on segment and I became a partner. I developed a live cam beach site with my partners at Waves called e-surf.com.br. The software I developed for that is used today by many ski resorts too, and even by WaveWatch for sometime.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Friends and family. I love my country and specially my hometown Santos, where I am near to the beach and I meet friends of a lifetime walking in the streets.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I am really happy for Jair invitation. I believed it is going to be a big event, with a lot of interesting things and best of all, it is in Santos. :)

I hope people enjoy. They are not great productions, I do them with what I have on hands, but It has a lot my of my passion about the theme. I think this why same people like it.

When did you find out that you would be a film maker?
When I broke my leg surfing 2nd reef pipe in 1997.

What do you want to show to people when you do your movies?
The simultaneous sensation of hearing a good song you’ve never heard before while watching really aesthetically pleasing wave riding that you have never seen before.

What’s surf for you?
Surfing for me is the same as it ever was. one of many ways to live a full life.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
I got invited to the Eddie Aikau. That was pretty cool I thought. Other than that, my highlights have just been a few good evening surfs with my friends.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
When I think of Brasil I think of very passionate people. I think of people who have worked hard to get where they are. Oh ya, and I think of those little bikinis. We need more of those in America.

How do you feel to be part of the film festival over here in Santos city?
Any time you put live music together with art and surfing you are going to have a good thing. I’m honored to be a part of any event like that.

When I got to college, I learn that be an artist it’s an intellectual occupation and the act of painting is more about thinking, other than do it. I also saw that it was people that do art for living. So, I found out that I want to live like that.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
Depende no projeto. Cada projeto tem diferentes motivos e idéias para comunicar.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
Ganhei uma bolsa Fulbright para morar e pintar no Rio de Janeiro para um ano, tudo pago pelo governo. Tive varias exposições em museus com vários projetos. Um projeto que ainda esta viajando pelos museus é de 15 enormes gravuras sobre a guerra no Iraque.
I won a Fullbright Schollarship to live and paint in Rio de Janeiro for one year, all paid by the government. Also had a lot exhibition in museums with a lot of projects. One project that still travels around museums is 15 huge prints about the war in Iraq.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
O Rio, a vida urbana com onda e uma cidade grande e super interessante.
Rio de Janeiro, the urban life with waves and one big town full of interesting stuff.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
Acho uma peno que não posso estar lá. Gostaria conhecer a cidade.

What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Guilherme Tonelli a.k.a biruta and I’m from Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, now based in Itapema, a beach close to it.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I've always been drawing since childhood, when I was at school I started making caricatures of my teachers and friends, later I started painting surfboards, but I only realized that I would be an artist, when I found myself in an art exhibition in São Paulo at the MIS (Museu da Imagem e do Som). My artwork was selected for a group show, the II Mostra Internacional de Arte e Cultura Surf, over there at the exhibition; I could see and talk to artists themselves. Craig Stecyk, Art Brewer, Mark Sutherland were there, with their artworks exposed at MIS. From that point on I decided I would like to be an artist and like those guys, to show their artworks around the world.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
I want to show new creations, colors, different visions of things, and my innermost style of drawing.

What’s surf for you?
Surfing is more than a sport it's a life culture, and is pure fun, some way to refill your body and brain with ideas and energy. I mean you can go out for surfing in a "crap" day, with clouds and windy or cold water, and get only one wave or two, and say it sucked, but when you'll be out there on the sand you'll start feeling a plesant sensation.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
My career has just begun, I can say my highlights were exhibitions at the: II Mostra Internacional de Arte e cultura Surf, MIS, São Paulo (2005). Video: "Arte de Lata", selected for the; Motomix Art&Music Festival, MIS, São Paulo (2005), IV Mostra Internacional de Arte e Cultura Surf, Oca - Ibirapuera, São Paulo (2007). and the V Mostra Internacional de Arte e Cultura Surf, Bienal - Ibirapuera (2008).

Eight Thousand Kilometers of coast... there might be some secret spots hidden somewhere...

I like the music from The Mattson 2 since like, two years ago. Never thought about seeing them live. Some weeks ago I email them…. And in January we will have the pleasure to see and listening to them playing live… It’s so unreal that I even can’t believe they will come… Jonathan is a very kind and funny dude and will be so sick to share some waves with them. Beer it’s already on the fridge, and most of the Brazilians that I know are already very happy and excited about it….
So, this for me it’s the most amazing news for this festival. The Mattson 2 live in Brasil…. Yuppie!!!!!!!!

Who are you guys and where you guys from?
We are the Mattson 2, Jared Mattson on guitar and I (Jonathan Mattson) on the drums. We are from San Diego California.

When did you find out that you would be an artist/musician?
Well i think it all started in Middle school, we were very influenced by our older brothers that all played music, and listened to music. I think i really wanted to be a musician when i got my first drumset at age 15. From there we started a band and I practiced with Jared all the time. Jared played guitar, i played drums----so in a way we grew and learned each others vocabulary together.

What do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?
I want them to feel good when they hear it. I want it to be like a musical and engaging journey.

What’s surf for you?
Hmmmm being in beautiful weather, mellow knee high waves, surfing on a single fin log. Than taking a break with some beers. None of this competitive, bad vibe stuff.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
I think a major turning point in our carrier was doing our first tour in Japan. We did that tour with our collaboration project called Ray Barbie Meets Mattson 2. That was an amazing experience not only being in a whole new world but also meeting a great community of inspiring Artists/musicians/surfers/and all around good people

You guys been around good art, and good artists. Do you think this is all inspiring to your music?
Definitely. I think we wouldn’t have the sound we have today if it wasn’t for the art of people like Thomas Campbell, Barry McGee, Alex Kopps, Evan Hecox, Tobin Yelland, and Ed Templeton--and of course other great inspiring artist.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Hmmm i always think of a very tropical postcard. Nice light blue waters, good weather--you know like----paradise.

About the show here, what came thought your minds when this opportunity to come to Brasil happens?
I was super excited. I love traveling seeing new cultures, and I love the reaction other cultures have to our music---I think our sound has an international wide ranged racial appeal---being that it is instrumental and totally honest expression from the heart. So when i got your invitation to come to Brasil it was very exciting for me.

How you guys feel about coming and playing in Brasil?
I can’t wait to see the culture, and to play music, and be around locals that know the area, and can take us around for a good time.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
Since my first memories I enjoyed looking at things, always drawing, modifying, painting things around me like chairs, schoolbooks and deeply always knew my true passion for visuals and art.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
Guess I’m trying to answer that question since the first day, and when you know exactly what are you trying to show, you are a complete artist, still working to acomplish that. But generally I try to show the way I feel things.

Well, I always figure that; surf for me Is like sex for a 15 old kid, when I’m not thinking in doing it, trying to do it, I’m doing it.

What’s you name and where are you from?
Alexandre Vianna, São Paulo, Brasil.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I'm a skateboarder, writer, photographer and I 'm addicted on working with projects that will build some culture, will make a legacy. I started really young, around 14 years old, filming and editing skateboard videos with my neighborhood friends. Since that, I never stopped! ... 24 years producing videos, photos, events, magazines, books, expos, and a lot of crazy stuff, with the goal on developing the skateboard culture in Brazil. Or at least get recognition for the scene. But it was in 1995 that I started making photography with a different perspective. I wanted to make skateboard photography in Brazil more on an art level, and from that point my mind started working on that.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
I want to contribute on building a legacy for brazilian skateboarding culture. Something that people will get proud on the future.

What’s skateboarding for you?
It's the way I choose to live my life. A lifestyle that made me sees and feels this world in a different way.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
I'm a multidiscipline person. Skated as a professional skateboarder for a decade, became photographer, editor, producer... I write a lot also. It's hard to point highlights in a career that have a lot of different layers, different phases. But there are two things that I like to remember, because they have a lot of meaning to me. I filmed and edited, in the beginning of the 90's, one of the first and important brazilian skateboard videos ever made, called Dirty Money. It was the first video part of skaters like Bob Burnquist and Nilton Neves, when they were amateurs. After 16 years people still consider one of the most important videos made in Brazil, because it changed the scene and showed that a new generation of skaters was ripping. The other moment was the book called "São Paulo in Mouvement" released in France. A french writer called Anne Louyot choose 25 people that she considered really important for São Paulo City, people that in her point of view made a difference in São Paulo for the Culture and Social scene. She chooses people like Os gemeos, Gilberto Dimenstein, Alex Atala, the soccer player Rai with his social organization, some important people. She told a story of each one of them in the book and I had the honor to be one of the 25. She just looked all around São Paulo, made some research, and realized that the skateboard scene was something really big in town. Being part of that was a special moment for me. Being recognized in a higher level, for doing something for the skateboard scene.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
I love this place! People need to have a better education in general, but things have improved. I have faith and I will work, as I can, to help Brazil to be a better country.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
It's an honor to be part of this art show in Santos, with Skateboard Photographers like Fabio Bitão and Grant Brittain.

What’s you name and where are you from?
My name is Paula Marina and I was born in Recife, Pernambuco, but I live in São Paulo, Brazil.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I’m not really sure about when, but everything I remember in my life is connected with art, especially literature and visual arts. I fell in love with literature when I was 10 year old and started reading everything I could, all kinds of books, magazines, newspapers, etc. Then I started writing too. Before that I already had a collection of drawings, photos and illustrations that I used to cut from publications and at 18, photography became a big passion. So, I graduated in journalism.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
I want people get emotional when they see my photos. It could be any feeling: happiness, love, enthusiasm, they could feel angry or just curious about it. I want people feel something.

What’s surf for you?
It’s pure beauty. It’s about the connection between man and nature. Surf is emotion and passion.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
Most of highlights in my career are about my working with events. The most important for me was organizing a music festival for teenagers from poor areas in São Paulo years ago and see how many talented kids we have and how happy they are when they have a chance to show their talent. I still connected with many of these kids and it´s amazing seeing that they grab the opportunity and are studying music! As a photographer, I had some of my photos chosen for a national ad campaign for the biggest brazilian telecommunications company last Summer. On my recent trip to Hawaii I could experience another culture, see the big waves, swim with dolphins and document everything and was really unforgettable. One of the things that I like more about photography is the opportunity to travel and meet people. Through photography I can meet interesting people and it doesn’t matter where I am. I’ve been doing that for the last three years around Brazil.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Home, beauty, energy, social problems and a happy people.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
This is amazing, I’m very proud! Santos is one of my favorite cities and I also worked there for five years, its part of my life. This city is full of good energy, beautiful people, history and cool places to visit.

Emissario Submarino of Santos

I took this photo like a month ago from a helicopter. This is the Emissario Submarino of Santos and the walls of buildings that go all the way through the beach. The red sculpture on the right, it’s a work of Tomie Ohtake, a Japanese artist lady that came to Brasil some long years ago. The whole park it was designed by Tomie’s son, Ruy Ohtake and will have picnic places, a skatepark, a huge lifeguard tower, the first public Surf Museum in Brasil and a big deck to watch the waves … This is where we will have the V Santos Surf Festival. A week event with activities, all for free… It will have place for the kids to play, a longboard contest will be taking place over there too. And much more… It really nice to see those waves breaking and think that this is where the surf born in Brasil. Wyland

When I was younger I remember reading surf magazines about the Hawaiian winter and I remember a contest in Haleiwa called Wyland Hawaiian Pro. Years after that, well some months ago, I got the chance to meet Wyland, went to dinner with him and his crew, and it was sick to have him in town painting a mural on the local aquarium. When I was driving him to the hotel, after dinner, I explain to him about the art show and he was super cool and kind to donate a piece to the Surf Museum. The art above will be donate to the city, and will be permanently on the Surf Museum here in Santos. Wyland is a good man, very nice and funny dude and it was a huge honor to meet him and have him on the show that I curate. It’s actually amazing!

What's you name and where are you from?
Wyland. Just Wyland. I was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
When I was 4 years old, I would paint dinosaurs and jurassic scenes. I know I wanted to be an artist.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
In my art I like to show people the beauty in nature and inspire them to think about protecting it.

What's surf for you?
Surf in being in the ocean, meditation, and inspiration.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Painting the largest mural in the world in Long Beach, California for the Guinness Book of World Records. Completing 100 Whaling Walls in 27 years, the last one in Beijing for the Green Olympics. Displaying all of the Hands Across the Ocean art at the National Mall with the Smithsonian in Washington, DC in October 2008. Beijing official artist for the International Year of the Reef 2008. Induction into the Diving Hall of Fame in 1998.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Beautiful women, beautiful people, beautiful beaches... and of course the Amazon Rain Forest.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
Santos is an amazing city and we were treated warmly. I look forward to my return and bringing the Wyland Foundation one day to Brasil.

What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Christiaan Bailey and I come from Penzance in Cornwall, United Kingdom. Penzance lies in an area of Cornwall called Penwith, it is a very narrow peninsula, the north side is very rugged with exposed rock, but beautiful sandy beaches and very clear water, the south has more trees and there are a few very good quality reef breaks. Penzance is a very old trading port, we used to have a Portuguese embassy here, because of the all the visiting sailors and business people, but that was back in the 1700's.

When did you find out that you would be a film maker?
I wanted to be a film maker since I was 17 when I watched a BBC documentary about a camera man.

What do you want to show to people when you do your films?
I want to share the history, culture and joy of surfing. It's mostly about the joy, discovering new places, achieving new ambitions, sharing fond memories.

What’s surf for you?
For me surfing is an intense experience, both physically and emotionally, it keeps me fit, raises my awareness and helps put things in perspective. I personally surf a variety of boards, a 1965 Hayden Longboard 9'6', a Biofoam twin fin fish 5'10', a 6' 8' single fin, and a couple of ply wood belly boards and a Tom Wegener 'Alaia', which is lots of fun, although sometimes I just body surf.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
I think that the highlights have been meeting amazing characters, I could brag about the famous names I have encountered, but they are more than names, they are people and some of them are very beautiful in spirit. Meeting inspirational people keeps me inspired and motivated to keep pushing forward in all aspects of my life.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Beauty and passion.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I feel very happy to be part of it, I do not know a lot about the details of the show, but I get the impression that the people organizing it are good people, who want to share the magic of surfing with others. This seems worthy to me, and it is exciting to think that people in Santos city will see my film and that some might even enjoy it and/or be inspired by it.

Some words to the people that will see your work in Brasil...
My film is about a place (Noosa Heads, Australia), which is protected by a nature reserve. The point waves bring a lot of joy to all and inspire many to push the limits on their heavy surfboards. These places need to be cherished, as do all the experiences they bring, so my message is to celebrate what you have, protect and feed the positive and it will flourish in ways that you might never imagine.

Mai Britt Wolthers

What’s you name and where are you from?
My name is Mai-Britt Wolthers, I was born and raised in Denmark, but I live in Brazil since 1986. My husband is Brazilian and I was introduced to surfing when we met in 1984. It took me some years to realize the importance of surfing in his live.., all our 4 kids surf and I do surf a little too.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I always knew that I wanted to paint, that I "had" to paint, we are all born artists and if you have the "need” of art, it will come through sooner or later. I have studied art and painted regularly since 1994. Maybe art for me has the same importance as surfing has for John (my husband).

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
My enchantment of this planet, beauty of life.

What’s surf for you?
Surf is joy, freedom, the close contact to nature and friendship

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
When I was accepted at the 10th National Bienal in Brazil , Santos , I was very happy and proud , because it was a kind of an official acceptance of my art , I want my art to be contemporary and being accepted at the Bienal by the strict and qualified jury, I had the feeling of being on the right track.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Brasil is live, warm people, beautiful nature, beaches, surf, samba, coffee and soccer and it is my second home country. I love Brasil.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
Proud and happy, Santos is my hometown now and I am delighted to see so many artists from all over the world participating in the art show.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
In reality I did find out, was a consequence since I was a kid always doing artistic activities e sports that drove me to a life style related with art and photography, music and other elements that was present in that way I express myself.

Skateboard for me is more than a sport, it’s a lifestyle. It’s my bread and my water.

Photographer since 1992, I collaborate to the main local and foreign magazines. I’m part of the staff of the 100%Skate magazine since 10 years ago. Also work with the main skateboard brands from all around the world. Record a lot of people along their carriers, the skate scene since the beginning of 90’s and number of artists. I was part of a documentary from Sagatiba that I was one of the main characters showing my lifestyle. And in this year, 2008, I released my first photography book called “365Graus”.

I’m very proud that I born in Brasil. Getting the chance to reach a goal here is a very hard thing and that’s why people do so many things to survive. Mark Jeremias and Jason Baffa

I first did an interview with Mark Jeremias and Jason Baffa for a surf magazine here in Brasil, right after the movie was released in US. Mark and Jason where always so kind and nice. Sometime after that I was approached by Mark about his coming to Brasil with Mike Vallely and crew to film DRIVE in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Last march Mark gave the chance to spend eight days with them working as a translator and assistant here in Brasil. It was epic for me and I will never forget those days… Mark and Jason’s movie One California Day is epic… it’s beautiful and very emotional… I will have the pleasure to screen here for the film festival to show this art piece to all kinds of people that probably will never have the chance to see and experience California, but will have a teaser about what it is. Let’s give the word to my friends Mark and Jason…

What’s you name and where are you from?

MJ: My name is Mark Jeremias. I am originally for Germany, but grew up primarily in Newport Beach, California. I currently live in Costa Mesa, CA.

JB: Jason Baffa from the South Bay, California.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?

MJ: I started experimenting with making Super 8 mm films in Middle School, but it wasn’t until I got into college that my interest in Filmmaking turned into a passion and career goal.

JB: as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawing and painting. my parents were very supportive of my creativity and always allowed me to create things - from artwork, to Lego creations, to home made creatures and eventually movies - I got a super 8mm film camera from my grandma when I was 7yrs old and that was when I first started shooting movies.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?

MJ: My approach to filmmaking is simply to capture the moment. My style is deliberately of a slower pace and intimate with long shots and use of long lenses. In a world that is so fast paced, I really try to bring attention to the subtleties of a scene. In surfing, that means calling attention to not only the action on the wave, but also the light, wind, and geographic surroundings.

JB: I think with both my films and my art, I try to give people somewhere to escape to. I like to take people on a journey, to somewhere new and let them enjoy being there hopefully, allowing them to leave the pressures of day to day life.

What’s surf for you?

MJ: Surfing for me is about a connection with nature.

JB: just yesterday, I jumped into the ocean to bodysurf and I told my friend how even body surfing a few waves changes my whole mood and state of mind. I truly love the ocean and my connection with the ocean - a fun day of surfing with friends is the best source of energy, spirituality and inspiration I have ever found. the ocean's energy truly affects me in ways that are difficult to put into words, I just feel so fortunate that I’ve grown up in Los Angeles and have always had the ocean in my life.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?

MJ: Through my work I have been able to travel to and experience some amazing places and meet some incredible people. Highlights include staying with a Zulu tribe in the hills of South Africa, visiting Old Town Jerusalem in Israel, and walking the streets of the City of God in Rio de Janeiro. These are all experiences that will stay with me forever.
JB: the world premiere of Singlefin: yellow at the Lido theatre in Newport Beach, CA. was pretty amazing - there was a line of about 600+ people, many had been waiting for hours, we literally finished putting the final credits on the film minutes before the screening - the energy in the room and the response to the film showed me that we really had something special. Years later, getting to work with Greg Noll, Lance Carson and Skip Frye on One California Day was truly an amazing experience. These guys are pillars in the chain of surf history and I’m honored to have them involved in our film One California Day - screening the film with Mark to sell out crowds in film festivals like Santa Barbara, Maui, Rio, Rincon Puerto Rico, France, and San Sebastian Spain – that has been an extremely rewarding experience. I'm truly moved that people all over the world enjoy my films.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?

MJ: I was fortunate enough to visit Brazil in 2008. Before going there I didn’t really know much about it. But now having visited, when I think of Brazil I think of the character of the people....determined, courageous, and resilient.

JB: Caipirinhas! But really, just great, giving people, who are so inspired in they way they live - I was so impressed to see all the people running, walking, surfing, playing beach soccer and spending time outside in Rio - I’ve tried to embrace that level of activity in my life and enjoy it as much as I think the Brazilian people do.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?

MJ: It’s always nice to share your work with people, especially when those people come from a different culture.

JB: It’s just awesome. We make these things to share with people and to know that thousands of miles away someone is looking at your work and that you might be inspiring them - that is a humbling experience and I’m just honored.

MJ: Enjoy One California Day, it was a labor of love to make, and hopefully will give many of you, who never get the chance to come to California, a glimpse into California’s rich surf culture.
JB: although surfing is the context, I hope my work inspires people in their daily life – whether its the sharing of one surfboard, like in Singlefin: yellow - or embracing heritage and the beauty of your home, like we did with One California Day - the themes in these films apply to all people in all places and I hope the people of Santos City are entertained and inspired. Drew Kampion

Drew Kampion is well known one of the best, if not the best surf journalist from the history of surf. What´s you name and where are you from?
Drew Kampion, born in Buffalo, New York ... near one of the Great Lakes.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
My favorite art forms are drawing, writing & photography. I started drawing when I was young (of course) and should still be doing it. I started writing 'seriously' when I was 16, wrote a book of short stories and a novel before I was 18. I wrote and edited many articles and stories as editor of surf magazines, beginning in 1967. I started taking pictures of surfers in 1968. Now I take pictures of most everything and everyone I encounter. Not because I'm an artist but because this entire world is art when seen as art.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
My goal in taking photographs is to capture a moment of communication ... between the subject (really the object, if I want to be objective) and me ... to capture the essential perfection contained in any moment.

Not sure what you are asking here. Surfing is ancient and futuristic magic.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
Drew Kampion is a former editor of SURFER (1968-72), SURFING (1973-82), WIND SURF (1982-89), and WIND TRACKS (1996-99) magazines. He was Editorial Director for the Patagonia clothing company (1990-91) and Associate Editor for NEW AGE JOURNAL (1992). He founded, published, and edited the ISLAND INDEPENDENT (1993-96), an award-winning “bioregional magazine in newsprint,” serving the “maritime rain shadow” islands of Washington State. For his work with the INDEPENDENT, he received first prize for editing a periodical with a circulation under 50,000. I am grateful if someone finds pleasure or 'fuel energy' in any of my photos ... if they appreciate the genius inherent in the subject, not the photographer.

Some words to the people that will see your work in Brasil...
Most of the more 'interesting' photographs I've taken are of surfers. Surfers accumulate a lot of powerful, beautiful, rewarding, difficult, and enlightening moments in their surfing lives, and this is reflected in the essential charisma that these individuals radiate. If surfers won't save the world, who will?

Ed lives in the beautiful Mexico. And, you know when you met someone, and it felts like you know each other for long time? That’s how I feel about Ed. Cool guy…. What's your name and where are you from?
Ed Fladung. I’m originally from California via Wisconsin via New York. I now reside in Bucerias, Nayarit, Mexico with my wife, Marcia. We have a boy that will most likely be born during the festival in January, very auspicious.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
It was a totally unconscious decision. I guess I’ve been an artist, more or less, my entire life. At the age of 10, my uncle (an painter and architect) asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I shrugged. He then asked me if I wanted to be an artist. I laughed and said “No, I don’t wanna be an artist, they don’t make any money!” What can I say, it was the 80s and the American sitcom show “Family Ties” was my favorite show that month.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
My mission is simply to document the things I see each day. I started photographing surf culture and street culture in Mexico, in general, as a way to visually tell my story, the story of someone who is experiencing a culture outside of their own. To people who aren’t apart of that culture, it is a window into something familiar yet foreign. To people who are apart of that culture, it’s a way to view that culture through fresh eyes. I try not to verbalize what it is I’m trying to communicate because often it’s not something I feel comfortable putting into words. It’s kinda like talking about music.

What's surf for you?
Surfing, to me, is about the entire experience: From waking restlessly in the middle of the night to waves dropping like bombs on the beach a block away; to choosing a board for what I (often wrong headedly) expect the day’s swell to bring; to walking the jungle trail; shimmying underneath the barbed wire; the explosion of a thousand nerve-endings as I hit the water; floating in the lineup, sizing up the horizon, looking for “my” wave; the first drop. Surfing is also days of frustration; constantly checking the swell report; weeks of flatness, only to realize you’ve been glued to the computer monitor and just didn’t use your gut to find the waves in a place you don’t normally check.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Most of the highlights in my carrier have been as a commercial artist (web designer). I have done work for high-profile companies and clients. I have won a few awards and been profiled in a few prestigious places. It was fun at the time. But nothing beats the feeling, the first time I sold a photograph to someone who had found my photography, over the internet. Imagine that! Someone who was so moved, seeing your work, that they contact you about buying a print. Stoked!

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
I think of rich cultural traditions and the buttery sound of the Brasilian Portuguese tongue – music to my ear; a gorgeous mix of cities, jungles and beaches; favelas and street art; wicked music, pop-culture, design and architecture; and how it all blends in the political, sociological and economic history of Brasil. I really hope I make it there sometime soon. It’s definitely on my travel list.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I love it. I really identify with the idea of crossing national boundaries to unite artists that share a common thread. The result expands the viewer’s preconceptions about what surf culture is or can be. I live in an area where “surf culture” is pretty narrowly defined. I try, at every turn, to help expand that definition and push it, and mush it and smudge it.

Some words to the people that will see your work in Brasil.
Hola Brasilian surfers!: you need to know that you are part of something greater. I don’t exactly know what “surfing” is, but I can say that whatever “it” is, it’s something you can only understand by getting out into the water, staring at the horizon for too long and sliding on ripples of energy moving through water. In this respect we are all one people tapping into the same giant collective unconscious. We are all interdependent. Americans (like me) tend to over verbalize things, but the Balinese say it best: Same Same.

What's you name and where are you from?
Julie Goldstein, Long Beach Island, New Jersey, USA.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I was always creative and loved to make art as a child and teenager. It was in college that I decided I will always make art no matter what happens. I have had many jobs in my life and always made the time to make woodcuts and draw. It is a part of me that will never go away.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
I hope that my work stimulates people in a way that helps them to be more aware of their surroundings, to observe and to want to create. I hope they can get my sense of humor, passion and feelings toward what is real and meaningful in life.

What's surf for you?
The sea is a place where I feel the most real. Surfing is something that I am very fortunate to have in my life. It makes me happy on all levels, even when it is February and freezing, I still love being in the water and learning something new every time I surf. It stimulates me athletically and creatively, what more can I ask for?

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
My most recent and most influential experience has been traveling to Central America and Mexico. I spent time watching the women in these cultures and how they load the kids up onto their moped and dirt bikes. They are mostly barefoot and can usually fit 2- 4 kids on the back of the bikes sans helmets. Most often they have groceries and or other bags with them. It is pretty amazing compared to our own society. It really put things into perspective for me and I have enjoyed creating a body of work based off these fearless yet nurturing mothers and women.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Color, Energy, Music.. I need to visit!

How do you feel to be part of the film festival over here in Santos city?
I feel fortunate to be involved in this year's festival. I admire many artists in the show and am grateful to be apart of this exhibit.

What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Grant Myrdal. I grew up surfing in J-Bay South Africa but now I live in the mountains of bend, Oregon, USA and have become a dedicated snowboarder as well as a surfer.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
After a few years of shooting some friends said my work was decent and I should try to show it in art galleries. Little by little I realized that maybe I was becoming an artist.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
More than anything, the beauty of the natural world, whether it be in the ocean or the mountains. I like to shoot stuff that is a little unusual, abstract images if you will, and bring people's attention to details that they might take for granted or walk right past without noticing.

What’s surf for you?
Well it keeps changing; right now surf is slicing through deep powder. But in truth it is the whole experience I love - traveling to the ocean, hanging out at the beach with friends, watching waves, daydreaming, surfing, talking about it and being able to photograph the ocean in all its various moods.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
I think the highlight so far was getting my first solo show in New York City. I come from a small town in South Africa so to get a break in New York was quite special. I was really nervous that first opening night.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Party time, Rio, small bikinis, jujitsu and some charging Brazilian surfers I have seen in Hawaii.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I am honored to be a part of the show especially because it will be in the new surf museum.

My name is Heather Brown and I live in Hawaii, but I am from Southern California.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
Since I was a little girl, I was always making art. I’ve only been working a full time artist though now about two years

I want to show them a fresh and new perspective on art... And make something that is different from the rest.

What’s surf for you?
I love surfing! It’s soulful, it’s fun, its exercise, it’s peaceful, it’s exhilarating, it’s interacting with nature, and it’s beautiful.

Two big highlights this year were, working with Jack Johnson to create his Kokua Fest poster, and also working with Randy Rarick to make the women’s Vans Triple Crown poster for this year.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Well, since I live on the North Shore, I have made a lot of friends here that are from Brasil who come here for the waves. They are so full of life and happy.

Felipe Siebert

Felipe Siebert's boards are art pieces, and it's ironic that most brazillians don't recognize wood boards as art pieces that can be ridden. But Felipe does. He's probably one of the finest crafters in Brazil and I can't wait to surf one of his crations. More than beautiful boards, he's got some beautiful words to spread.

What´s you name and where are you from?
My name is Felipe Siebert. I'm from Florianópolis, an island located in the south of Brazil, but my family is originally from Laguna, 70 mile to the south. Whenever I can I still go there to surf, and most of the pictures posted on our blog and our website were taken there too.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
Since I was a kid, I allways loved to draw and mess around with electrical devices. But I don't consider myself as an artist, because I have a more technical view about my work. Maybe I consider the ability to find solutions on better ways to build boards to be an art.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
My intention is to build something good for people. I want to help rescue the best things that surf produced in terms of art and culture.

What´s surf for you?
In it's essence, surf for me is that moment when I take off on a wave, and I try to use my ability to overcome my limitations day by day, and when I do It, and I paddle back to the outside at my local break in Laguna and then I look around. That moment, though it happens a lot, is allways very special.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
The highest point in my career is to see my friends having fun riding my boards. Other than that is to get recognition from people like Tom Wegner, who I deeply admire. Through my work I was able to meet people I knew from videos, like Donavon Frankenreiter, G. Love and Braddigan (from Dispatch).

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
When will the brazillian surfers realize that there's so much more besides WCT and tri-fins?

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
To me is a great honor to participate on an exibition side-by-side with artists I allways admired and looked after, throughout blogs, sites and movies.

When I was 20years old, me and my friends made a own Bar and Restaurant at our local area YOKOHAMA. We all surfers.We love 60’s 70’s music and culture.We didn’t have enough money. So we build the Bar by ourselves. Of course we couldn’t pay for design of Signboard, menu, Logo, and any artworks. I did every art works for the Bar. I think that is my first experience for artwork. I worked the Bar for 5years.I did so many artworks for the bar.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
All is equal on the sea and the wave shines to all people and shows various colors. There are various colors in the world, and the all is equal, and the world is beautiful simply because there are various colors.

What’s you name and where are you from?
Ben Waters, Newport Beach Australia

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
My family was, and still is artistically self-sufficient. What I mean by this is if we wanted a painting to put on the wall we would measure it up, cut the timber, make a frame, stretch the canvas and paint it ourselves; if we wanted a sculpture to put in the garden we would just make it. I don’t think it ever occurred to me to not do it this way. That’s what my upbringing gave me I guess. My 4-year-old daughter as a result is heading down the same path now and is always ready to; as she puts it, ‘just make stuff’

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
That its fun, its enjoyable, it’s a celebration of ideas and expression, just like surfing is. It also involves a skill, like all things do, but mostly that it is pleasurable.

What’s surf for you?
The simple pleasure of being in the ocean.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
Working on the Bells beach Ripcurl pro poster and clothing a few years back, 1st solo exhibition this year at Tigerfish gallery in Torquay, and designing and making art with Jim Mitchell at Shortstraw

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Almost. I went to South America a while back to surf and travel and almost got to Brasil. I hope to go there one day.

How do you feel to be part of the film festival over here in Santos city?

If I can relate my art to the analogy of surfing, then my art is about the other wave. Not the wave where you try to do the biggest flashiest most futuristic manoeuvre possible, rather the wave you share with your friends and family, all hooting each other. Just goofing around really, but also aware of the beauty of the ocean and your surroundings and also the feeling it gives you inside.

Art Brewer its the man. Since I was a young kid, I use to ready my cousins Surfer Magazines and read his names on sick photos. Then he's here, part of the second Santos SurfArt. Some people say we should not look after our dreams. Well, this is a dream come true. Art Brewer, as part of the art show that I organize. Wow… He sends two photos. One it's this above. It's Barry Kanaiaupuni in Sunset in the late sixties. And the other one you must see it….. It's amazing and I will keep the secret until the show… Art, man…. When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I never thought of myself as and artist, I feel the word artist is over used and has cheapened the meaning; every body says they are artist.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
What I’ve seen. My images are only documentations of places and people in time, sometimes the images are important at that moment when they were taken, others become important as they age. I take pictures for myself and I hope to share my perspective on how I see things

What's surf for you?
It‘s very personal, it's to bad that it has become something that‘s become so mainstream. it’s getting lost in corporate greed and everyone wants to be a surfer and make a dollar from it .A lot of the soul is gone because of this. This is partly my fault by being one of a few dozen photographers early on in the sport to record and share the magic and adventure surfing had to offer and then put it in magazines. Now it has come back to bite me with more and more people in the water every where in the world when I'd like a uncrowded wave.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Secret spots, untouched places that once had uncrowned waves, special people that are friends for life in a special tribe of water people.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Some trusted friends, future world champions, unshaken nationalism and pride.

What's you name and where are you from?
My name is Jesse LeDoux. I'm originally from the Northwest corner of the US, and then moved to the East Coast for 3 years. I've spent the last year living in Tokyo.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I started my studies in college with the intention of being a mechanical engineer. As my grades started slipping, I realized I had been fooling myself the entire time. It was art that I had wanted to be doing all along.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?

What's surf for you?
Surfing is a nice escape. I don't get to do it nearly enough, so when I do, it's a rare treat. It's a time where I can be alone with my thoughts, without any distractions.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Every new opportunity for me is a small new highlight. I've been nominated for a Grammy. I've created my own line of toys. I've made art for snowboards, bike helmets, book covers and skateboard trucks. And I've been able to show my work around the world. I feel that I've been lucky to have many highlights I'm very proud of.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Sun and good food. Am I right?

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I'm excited! I've heard that the new museum looks incredible. It's an honor to be invited to have my work in the show.

My name is Lana Porcello, and I live in San Francisco, CA.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I feel most excited about making art when I can connect with the intuitive part of my consciousness, so in that way, I think art came most easily to me when I was very small. Now that I am older, I try to find ways to reach back to that beginning place in order to create art that feels true and meaningful to me.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
I hope that I can express some of the simple truths that connect us and make us all part of the same network of life.

What’s surf for you?
I am very very much a beginner surfer! I grew up in a coastal area of Boston where the sea is an integral part of everyday life, but few people surf. Now, in California, it's fun and challenging to learn about this new way of interacting with the ocean.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
Moving to San Francisco has taught me so many difficult and important lessons about myself as an artist, so these last few years have been a pivotal time of change and growth in my art.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
To me, Brasil is both energetic and serene, overflowing with music and beauty. I can't wait to go back!

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I guess I’ve always made stuff. Lots of us I think are born with that desire to create. It hasn’t really been a conscious decision. It’s just an extension of who I am.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
I believe that surfing can teach us how meaningful and precious life really is. If my work ever inspired anyone out there to surf with a little more gratitude for the gift of breathing, then I’d be a happy man.

What’s surf for you?
I love surfing with my whole heart. I’m concerned with where it has been, where it is, and where it’s going. For me, surfing isn’t just sport, it isn’t just physical. It’s actually metaphysical; it’s an experience of the heart & the spirit. It’s a way of being & breathing in an imperfect world. It’s a place to go to, a place to be, a place to belong.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
Every now and then I get emails from people from different places in the world who write to tell me how much like they like my work. It’s very humbling and very encouraging.

Football. Music. Beautiful women. Passionate people.

What’s you name and where are you from?
Rafael Mellin, from Ipanema, Rio.

When did you find out that you would be a film maker?
I started playing around with vhs cameras when I was 15, just taking turns with my friends to film everybody surfing. i then started editing some stuff using 2 vhs players at home and as I’ve always liked doing that, i just kept doing it until it naturally became my profession.

What do you want to show to people when you do your films?
i like to share the way I see things. in surfing, I like to show people how I look at waves, travelling, performance, etc. it's also a way to share the stoke and give some credit to the surfers I admire in the water.

What’s surf for you?
That's not an easy question. And I’m not sure I can define precisely what surfing means to me.
Surf is a lot of things. At the same time is an art, a sport, a passion, a source of energy, an industry, a getaway, and an excellent reason and excuse to spend your life wandering around the world in search of things you won't find.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
As a surfing video maker, so far my highlights would be the great opportunities I had to show my films around the world to different groups of people.
When "Samba, Trance and Rock n Roll" won the award of best film in the International Festival of St. Jean de Luz, in France, it was great honor - specially receiving compliments from guys like Jeff Hackman,Michael Halsband, Bruno Delaye and the whole jury. And that allowed me to show it around, in places like New York, Florida and throughout Brazil.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Brasil means a bunch of things. It's my country, my people, my friends. It reminds me of many joyful things and a few sad ones.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I feel honored and privileged to be a part of an event in the company of such great artists. There are a lot of people I really admire and it just feels like being a fan amongst some of my references in surfing art.

Surf is the only thing outside of art that consumes my mind and body so completely when I'm doing it that I am completely in the present. Time is irrelevant when you're on a wave and the same thing goes for when you're riding a swell of creativity.

Getting my own studio. Reflecting on my drawings and paintings, which I think of as a colorful trail that represents moments in time from my life that will be here long after I'm gone.

What´s you name and where are you from?
Michael Sowry, but everyone calls me Mick, Micko, Mickey, or in my mate Richie's case, Doogs. (it's a long story). I live in St Kilda, a beachside suburb of waveless Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. I wish I lived right on the coast, with a view of a favourite wave. One day.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I've always been artistically inclined, but that doesn't make me an artist.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
A window to another way of looking at things.

What´s surf for you?
An always place. In Victoria I can paddle out at spots I've surfed all my life, and when I'm there, I'm eighteen again.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
After 30 years in advertising surprisingly my highlight would have nothing to do with it. Musica Surfica. It was the first time I did something that was just for me.
Another is my blog, as it's just a great outlet for the odd creative thought that would otherwise never see the light of day.

What’s your name and where are you from?
Frank Cubillos. I was born in Bogota Colombia to a Cuban mom and Colombian father. We moved to the U.S. when I was 2 years old. I’ve been living in California since then.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
Growing up I was always drawing, I didn’t really pick art as a career path until I was in college, I enjoyed illustration and graphic design and made that my focus. All the while I continued painting, eventually showing my work in local galleries in Los Angeles.

What do you want to show to people when you do your art?
I try to reach positive notes of heart felt affirmation of passion for life and spirituality through color, curves, line, shape and texture. I try to create a graceful flow with an engaging playful charm.

What is surf for you?
The act of riding a wave is about as close a divine feeling as I’ve ever felt. Surfing is the connection to something beyond our understanding. That connection is what surfing is all about, it’s powerful and it keeps us coming back for more.

What’s you name and where are you from?
Mick Waters, The Pocket, Australia.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I have always liked drawing ever since I was a kid. My mum is a really good drawer so I think is why I started. I still draw sometimes, not very often though. But as an adult you find different mediums to move into As a kid it is very basic, painting or drawing. Now we have many options and there is so much technology enabling people to be creative in different ways. Filming surfing and making movies is my creative avenue.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
Hopefully, something beautiful? You are trying to inspire people, evoke a feeling or a thought. I hope it is also a reflection of me and who I am.

What’s surf for you?
Surfing is very important to me. It is up there with family and friends as being something that I would struggle to do without. My family and friends come first, but surfing is a definite second. It keeps me sane, provides exercise, lets me travel, meet new people and to have some of the most unique experiences that only surfers can.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
Being able to do what I do for a living. Not many people get to follow their dreams and get paid for it. The places I have been to and the friends I have made through my job is amazing.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
The world’s best soccer team, the brothers who teach jiu jitsu and that dancing, gymnastics, cross martial arts thing you do. Insane! Lots of passion.

Andrew Kidman. What should I say about Kidman... He is the biggest influence in my art, and I'm sure in a lot of the surf artists around the world. He does everything good. Anytime I go to the ocean, watching it, riding it, and seeing my kids play in it.

Highlights for me are when the magic of art happens, I’ll work so hard on something struggling away, not really knowing why and then one day something breaks and it all makes sense. Like a song one day comes from nowhere and sums up everything I believe in. This is the highlight for me when making any kind of art.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Best soccer players in the world. Neco and Flavio Padaratz, Fabio Gouveia - those guys are kings, they have great spirits and are great surfers. Neco is one of my favorites.

Tom Wegener was so kind and will arrange a custom alaia specially for the show. He is bringing back all the wood board feelings to our lifes. From what I see, Tom and his boards are all about love.

What´s you name and where are you from?

Tom Wegener. I am from Southern California but now I live permanently in Australia.

When did you find out that you would be a shaper?

My brothers and I always made everything that we needed from when we were very young. I shaped my first board for myself when I was 11 years old. I think it was 1976.

What do you want to show to people when you do your boards?

Now when I make my alaia boards it is really important that people see how little impact these boards will have on our environment. I am able to have a very clean factory now and all the waste that I make goes back into my gardens. I also love the way they surf which is important of course.

What´s surf for you?

Small fun days with my family when we can avoid the crowds and the pressure of competing for waves are my best surfing days now.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?

Playing Siestas and Olas to large crowds of people was a great time. Making and riding the Olo (the true surfboard of Hawaiian kings) is a real highlight. Meeting my wife – she interviewed me when I came to Australia to show Siestas, that’s how we met and we have always worked together.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?

Doesn’t everybody think of Brazilian women on the beach? I went to Rio once and had a great time. Also I like your coffee a lot! It is a place I would really like to visit with my family.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?

I am so honored to be a part of the global surfing community and to see surfing elevated to art as I have always thought of boards as works of art.

Here you are seeing an accurate interpretation of a very important part of surfing history. The ancient Hawaiians rode the alaia for hundreds of years. The ocean was a big part of their life. With this board, being made from wood and so finely shaped, it is possible to feel a real connection with nature – the land and the sea. Perhaps this is how the Hawaiians felt too.

I do fine art and I do cartoons - they are very different. Fine art is about celebrating the beauty of things; cartoons are about laughing at the humour of situations, mostly people's notion of their own importance.

Surfing is a way to keep in touch with the forces of nature, and a good way to stay fit.

Highlights have been the success of Gonad Man; the achievement of producing Dream; winning some prizes for my oil paintings.

Nat Russell did the poster for the second annual Santos SurfArt. He was always kind with me. He never got mad that I email him a thousand times changing details and asking this and that... What´s you name and where are you from?

My name is nathaniel russell. I am from Indianapolis, Indiana and i now live in San Francisco, California.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?

I can't remember a time when i didn't draw. I’ve drawn something almost every day of my life. it's just something i enjoyed and it seemed wrong to try to do anything else.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?

I want to share a commonality in all people. something that connects us to eternity. for me, it's about line and simplicity. rawness and honesty in the form and the content.

What´s surf for you?

The ocean. growing up in indiana, there is no ocean. when i moved to california i was flabbergasted. it's the biggest thing in the world. people write books and sing songs about the sea. it is endless.i am a horrible surfer. i have just started to even attempt to surf. somehow i have a lot of friends who are amazing surfers an artists. surfing makes me think of friendship and freedom.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?

Being able to work with my friends is the highlight. collaborating with friends, being able to travel for art. that has always been the dream for me: friends and travel.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?

Music. lots of music. guitars. people smiling. tourist photos. food.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?

I'm flattered, honored, and excited. it's humbling to think some pictures of mine will be all the way down there. it's amazing to me that the world is so small.

What's you name and where are you from?
J. Grant Brittain, I live in Encinitas, California near the beach with my two teenagers, my wife and our cat.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I was an art major at college and borrowed a camera from my roommate in 1979 and I haven't stopped shooting since then.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
With my Skateboarding photos, I want to show the drama and beuty of skateboarding. I do my fine art photography mainly for myself. That work is more of a personal diary and is a release for me and helps balance my life. If people like anything I do, that's cool

What's skateboarding for you?
I started skateboarding when I was 10 and surfing at 13 and the two activities have always been intertwined through my life since then. I am 53 years old now and I have been making a living in Skateboarding since 1978 when I got a job at the Del Mar Skate Ranch.
Skateboarding is such an independent lifestyle that it definitely runs into all aspects of my life, it helps keep me creative and young. My 14 year old son is skating now and I see the new found excitement that he's experiencing. I remember that when I started.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Highlights in my carreer- Probably helping start Transworld Skateboarding in 1983 and then leaving TW in 2003 and starting The Skateboard Mag from scratch. I had the same feelings and emotions 20 years apart, except now I am an owner and it's much more fullfilling and scary. We are running it ourselves and it's overwhelming at times.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Bob Burnquist. One of the greatest skateboarders that has ever stepped on a piece of wood.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I am honored to be a part of a show with some of the most creative artists I know.

Some words to the people that will see your work in Brasil...
If people see my work and it inspires them to pick up a camera or a skateboard, that's it for me.

Danielle Rubi

Danielle was the first girl that I invited for this year's show. Her photography is amazing and makes me stop and think... Above it's a portrait of Nat Russell. Below a little chat with her..

What´s you name and where are you from?
My name is Danielle Rubi. I was born in Santa Barbara, California. I am a citizen of both the US and Switzerland.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
During recovery of an accident in a hospital. I was in there for weeks and weeks and all I wanted to do was draw everything and anything around me. It healed me.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
I want to show people magical little worlds with photographs and objects that reveal the specialness and truths of such places. Traveling and investigating other peer groups around the world is what brings my generation together. I call this the circle of radness. I want to bring people into this circle.

What´s art for you?
The benefits I feel from creating art is when the public feels a mental hug from my work. I ultimately create things for my soul to feel whole and to learn about visual communication with others.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
I returned to my home town after having been away for about 14 years and had my first Museum show there 2 years ago. It felt pretty amazing to return to my childhood town and be on the Museum walls next to some of my early mentors. Another highlight was having my first New York City solo show this year. I brought the frost bitten New Yorkers in winter, inside a sunny west coast little world. Everyone took of their many layers of outer clothing and started dancing to the portable record player, while gazing into ocean scenes and portraiture of my circle of radness.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
I think of bold colors and graphic poster arts from the 1960’s. I think of Caetano Veloso, and beautifully dark skin. I think of minimal clothing and unbuttoned shirts and great minimalist architecture with a interesting angles and the color gold.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I feel honored and excited and love to keep it coastal! I can’t wait to investigate this part of the world and bring with it a new layer of ocean life into my work.

I've never really considered myself as an artist.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
Something simple that they can either find some connection with or find aesthetically pleasing. Generally I just try and be honest to what I know, the surfing's still there but the sunshine and palm trees aren't.

What's surf for you?
A day to day social activity built on triumph over adversity and the wonders of nature.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Whatever I'm doing next is the highlight. I hope it stays like that.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Sand, sunshine and a lot of Atlantic.

We are all artists at heart - it just takes a little time to realize that. Birth is the ultimate form of creation. Art is an extension of that. Some say "art is where the heart is"...........

For those that don't surf, a view into life from the eye of a surfer.... for those that do surf, it is my take on ''surf culture' outside of popular mainstream perception.

4-6 ft, offshore, and glassy at Tourmaline.

Fine Art Sales W/W, Surfrider Art benefits, the Alma Surf Festival, and publishings in England, Germany, the Netherlands, Brasil, United States, and Australia.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Friendly and free people. Natural beauty. Endless rain forests. Too many Skol's at a rain-drenched carnaval a few years ago...

This was the first art show... It was simple, organic, and, well... the first one...
We put everything below a tent, and we did it. We had 5000 visitors on the week days, and 15.000 on the weekend. All for free and pure enjoyment...

I Santos SurfArt 2008.

This was the flyer for the first annual Santos SurfArt, that happen on january 2008.

It was the first art show that I curated and it came ok.

We had 12 artists involved. Drew Kampion (USA), Maggie Marsek (USA), Albe Falzon (AUS), Andrew Kidman (AUS), Joao Felipe (BRA/HAW), Paulo Estevaleto (BRA), Fabio Placido (BRA), Casami (BRA), MaiBritt Wolthers (DEN/BRA), Santana (BRA), Sesper (BRA) and Jair Bortoleto (BRA).
