Mark Sutherland

Sutho is one of the biggest influences in my photograph. He probably don't know, but his drawings really inspires me to take pictures... His work is amazing and very beautiful. Part of the Litmus movement, Mark also play music with Kidman and Purchase, and his wife Rosie rocks... He send me two cartoons for the art show and this one above is one of them. What´s you name and where are you from?
Mark Sutherland. I grew up in Sydney, Australia.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I always knew I would be an artist, from when I was very small. I always felt comfortable drawing and painting things.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
I do fine art and I do cartoons - they are very different. Fine art is about celebrating the beauty of things; cartoons are about laughing at the humour of situations, mostly people's notion of their own importance.

What´s surf for you?
Surfing is a way to keep in touch with the forces of nature, and a good way to stay fit.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Highlights have been the success of Gonad Man; the achievement of producing Dream; winning some prizes for my oil paintings.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
I was lucky enough to go to Brasil a few years ago and the warmth of the people was what I remember most. Brasileiros appreciate the fine things in life, like art, much more than Australians.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I am excited to be exhibiting anywhere in Brasil. The life of an artist is hard, but to know there are people on the other side of the world who appreciate your work makes it all a little bit easier.

I'm always finding out what I have always known.

Relief from life's suffering. A spiritual place where I learn to grow beyond my boundaries.

Can you tell us some highlights in your career?
I won a blue ribbon for a drawing of a plant I did in the third grade. The school kept it on the wall for a month.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Smiles. People who love to live. Freedom of the soul.

Nathaniel Russell

Nat Russell did the poster for the second annual Santos SurfArt. He was always kind with me. He never got mad that I email him a thousand times changing details and asking this and that... What´s you name and where are you from?

My name is nathaniel russell. I am from Indianapolis, Indiana and i now live in San Francisco, California.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?

I can't remember a time when i didn't draw. I’ve drawn something almost every day of my life. it's just something i enjoyed and it seemed wrong to try to do anything else.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?

I want to share a commonality in all people. something that connects us to eternity. for me, it's about line and simplicity. rawness and honesty in the form and the content.

What´s surf for you?

The ocean. growing up in indiana, there is no ocean. when i moved to california i was flabbergasted. it's the biggest thing in the world. people write books and sing songs about the sea. it is endless.i am a horrible surfer. i have just started to even attempt to surf. somehow i have a lot of friends who are amazing surfers an artists. surfing makes me think of friendship and freedom.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?

Being able to work with my friends is the highlight. collaborating with friends, being able to travel for art. that has always been the dream for me: friends and travel.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?

Music. lots of music. guitars. people smiling. tourist photos. food.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?

I'm flattered, honored, and excited. it's humbling to think some pictures of mine will be all the way down there. it's amazing to me that the world is so small.

Grant Brittain

Grant Brittain is the best and most influencial skateboard photographer from the history. This is my words and you will probably agree with me... take a look at this shot above... Hosoi doing a sick power slide.... little more about Grant below...

What's you name and where are you from?
J. Grant Brittain, I live in Encinitas, California near the beach with my two teenagers, my wife and our cat.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I was an art major at college and borrowed a camera from my roommate in 1979 and I haven't stopped shooting since then.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
With my Skateboarding photos, I want to show the drama and beuty of skateboarding. I do my fine art photography mainly for myself. That work is more of a personal diary and is a release for me and helps balance my life. If people like anything I do, that's cool

What's skateboarding for you?
I started skateboarding when I was 10 and surfing at 13 and the two activities have always been intertwined through my life since then. I am 53 years old now and I have been making a living in Skateboarding since 1978 when I got a job at the Del Mar Skate Ranch.
Skateboarding is such an independent lifestyle that it definitely runs into all aspects of my life, it helps keep me creative and young. My 14 year old son is skating now and I see the new found excitement that he's experiencing. I remember that when I started.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Highlights in my carreer- Probably helping start Transworld Skateboarding in 1983 and then leaving TW in 2003 and starting The Skateboard Mag from scratch. I had the same feelings and emotions 20 years apart, except now I am an owner and it's much more fullfilling and scary. We are running it ourselves and it's overwhelming at times.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
Bob Burnquist. One of the greatest skateboarders that has ever stepped on a piece of wood.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I am honored to be a part of a show with some of the most creative artists I know.

If people see my work and it inspires them to pick up a camera or a skateboard, that's it for me.

Danielle Rubi

Danielle was the first girl that I invited for this year's show. Her photography is amazing and makes me stop and think... Above it's a portrait of Nat Russell. Below a little chat with her..

What´s you name and where are you from?
My name is Danielle Rubi. I was born in Santa Barbara, California. I am a citizen of both the US and Switzerland.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
During recovery of an accident in a hospital. I was in there for weeks and weeks and all I wanted to do was draw everything and anything around me. It healed me.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
I want to show people magical little worlds with photographs and objects that reveal the specialness and truths of such places. Traveling and investigating other peer groups around the world is what brings my generation together. I call this the circle of radness. I want to bring people into this circle.

What´s art for you?
The benefits I feel from creating art is when the public feels a mental hug from my work. I ultimately create things for my soul to feel whole and to learn about visual communication with others.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
I returned to my home town after having been away for about 14 years and had my first Museum show there 2 years ago. It felt pretty amazing to return to my childhood town and be on the Museum walls next to some of my early mentors. Another highlight was having my first New York City solo show this year. I brought the frost bitten New Yorkers in winter, inside a sunny west coast little world. Everyone took of their many layers of outer clothing and started dancing to the portable record player, while gazing into ocean scenes and portraiture of my circle of radness.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Brasil?
I think of bold colors and graphic poster arts from the 1960’s. I think of Caetano Veloso, and beautifully dark skin. I think of minimal clothing and unbuttoned shirts and great minimalist architecture with a interesting angles and the color gold.

How do you feel to be part of an art show over here in Santos city?
I feel honored and excited and love to keep it coastal! I can’t wait to investigate this part of the world and bring with it a new layer of ocean life into my work.

When did you find out that you would be an artist?
I've never really considered myself as an artist.

What do you want to show to people when you do you art?
Something simple that they can either find some connection with or find aesthetically pleasing. Generally I just try and be honest to what I know, the surfing's still there but the sunshine and palm trees aren't.

What's surf for you?
A day to day social activity built on triumph over adversity and the wonders of nature.

Can you tell us some highlights in your carrier?
Whatever I'm doing next is the highlight. I hope it stays like that.

Sand, sunshine and a lot of Atlantic.
